Payroll: How it Works

There have been a number of changes to the HMRC regime in recent years, which have made it harder for businesses to manage their payroll.

For instance, the introduction of PAYE RTI back in 2013 marked a dramatic change to PAYE reporting, with all employers required to notify HMRC of any PAYE liability in real time before making employee payments, placing extra pressure on payroll management.

The roll-out of auto-enrolment has also added to the burden for employers, who are now responsible for assessing whether their employees should be enrolled automatically into a workplace pension scheme.

These changes come on top of all of the administrative duties already associated with payroll, such as calculating pay, producing P45s, dealing with company car expenses, and so on.

That’s why many businesses choose to outsource their payroll, freeing themselves from the ongoing administrative burden and making big cost savings in terms of staff time, expensive monthly software costs and annual upgrades to their payroll systems.
